Sick!

I did stuff the past two days, but the slight cold I have has morphed into the flu.

So, no long posts till I get better and can concentrate on something without passing out.

It's Spring!

And the smell of film reels float in the air!

Ooooooo I simply love spring and summer, not just for the beautiful, sunny weather, the time spent lolling in pools and beaches and the chance to break out my collection of tank tops (which still outnumbers my winter clothes, despite living here for 7 years). Spring and summer are also...FILM FESTIVAL TIME!

So on International Women's Day, Juliet and I went to the Midtown Landmark Cinema, home of the ATL Film Festival, for WIFTA, to catch a series of women's shorts. We got free swag, in which shampoo was included (woot!) and synopsis of various Black Women's Literature. The link with the full collection of films, with synopses, is found here.

My favorites were as follows: "3 Days," "Tonky," "Addicted," "Sucker Punch," and "Freedom to Live." Not that I didn't enjoy the other films; these just happen to be my top picks.

Keep an eye out for these, as I'm sure this will not be the only festival you'll see these films at.

Scooter Daze

The past week I was the stunned and (emotionally) touched recipient of a scooter! And not some slim, small, Vespa. No, yours truly received a giganticBaccio runner!

Pretty sweet, huh? Well, the first lesson was almost my last. I got so nervous before I even rode on it (I mean, there's no doors! And cars are everywhere! Waiting to run over me!!) that I almost threw up. In the almost-empty parking lot we were practicing on. Yeah. Luckily, Juliet was there to guide me through it, and understood my need to not jump on and start zooming around. Then, ABZ came and guided me through more. Then I just let him ride it.

The next lesson was a scant ten minutes before work; I just spun around our parking lot a few times. But now, I am proud to say I have ridden the scooter to work TWICE; and ridden it a whole THREE BLOCKS to and from Jules’ house. That’s right; yours truly can actually MAKE TURNS, go OVER ten miles an hour, and ride up hills without panicking, slowing down, and then riding comically backwards until crushed by a semi.

And Sunday, when ABZ got off of work, we took this great ride down to Oakhurst, only a few minutes from EAV, and had the BEST wings ever at Steinbeck’s; at least, the best in Atlanta. I highly recommend these.Smoked for three to four hours, then basted with some butter sauce thing, and served with sides of hot sauce and blue cheese, these were devoured within minutes and made us wish we had multiple stomachs-or the stomachs of marathon eaters-so we could have had more.

After a walk around the area, we went to the Universal Joint, just catty-cornered from Steinbeck’s, and treated ourselves to Guinness and Strongbow while eating hummus. Sure, they might sound like odd pairings, but like I say “Any time is a good time for Guinness.”I also took my first night ride on the scooter. No, I didn’t drive, but riding on the back was exhilarating. I love being able to look around at all the houses. Oakhurst is a beautiful neighborhood, like many Atlanta neighborhoods outside the downtown area, and the houses all have a distinct identity.

With the warm weather coming out, I am looking forward to many more rides. However, I may still make ABZ do all the grocery runs. Moreland is a very scary road, car, scooter, or bus, and I’m not quite ready to hit it without a full suit of armor.

Sadness....

It's not at one that V means to ignore you, it's just that old dilemma of living so much life that one has no time to write it down!! How did Pepys do it?!?!

However, to reform to Miss V's resolutions....

A prayer, well-wishes, and the hopes of a thousand avenging angels to The Standard. Lest the last prt sound in jest, let me assure you, I mean every bit. Two employees were robbed late at night, and one was killed.

Actually, I had more, but after that, they seem like nothing. I need a day or so. I'm tired of this. It's not just the city, every place sees more and more crime. It's not good, and it's not fair. Me and all me friends, we thought death was something that happened when you're old, and we've had all these deaths, from freak accidents, from illness and now from people who don't give a fuck about their fellow man and just killing them. No matter what age you are, it's too young. We shouldn't have this. That bartender should be playing video games, or pouring a drink, or telling a joke, or whatever he loved to do, I don't know I didn't know him.

He can't moan at the Santa Clause 3 or pretend to grudgingly give in to A Christmas Story, while secretly loving it the whole time.

There's no more Valentines or fireworks.

And all that is still nothing, because he has no more day to day. No bills, no car, nothing.

I really meant for this to be happy but I can't. I can only think of two employees, one who survived, which I can't even dream of having those memories, and one who will never have a memory again.

Note: I have changed some items since, as a lot of information that was reported has since turned out to be exaggerated, mainly in the shooting and death. This does not change my feelings toward the matter at hand, but the community is working together and at this point we need to focus more on that and less on melodramatic writings.

Soooo busy....

Well, I should be sleeping, but wanted to drop a quick note before an already overdue bedtime.

Unfortunately, this lateness is not from a night of bar-hopping, catching a show at Icehouse, or anything decadant and fun. Rather, I spent most of the day with ABZ and his lovely lovely mama cleaning out and cleaning up his place, then off to the restaurant, then back to the house, then finally home and a shower, and now just catching up on all my correspondence before bed.

I've been working with Metamorphose a lot, and I am so excited at all the projects underway! I love seeing editors at work-it's reminds me of my school days with RCTV, only you know...they are better than I am at it.

Anyone have tips to keep hair from shedding? I'm tired of having to unclog my drain every two weeks and no matter how many times I comb it, it never seems to stop falling out. Now, I have a lot of hair, so I'm not worried about balding, but really, enough is enough.

Well, this post was a little less about Atlanta and more on me than usual (!!), but give me a few more days and I promise I'll be back on track with the news.

Until then,
